Living Your Best Life(gain)

Hey y'all! We got a sweet post today! All about Life-gain in Magic the Gathering! By the one and only Jake! He is one of our warehouse staff members and here is what he has to say about life-gain!
As a player who started playing Magic the Gathering Commander with Trostani, Selesnya’s Voice, life-gain has naturally been a strategy I’ve adopted and is very welcoming to new players in particular. Nowadays though, there’s more to just out-sustaining your opponents in the current meta and there are tools that all that life you gain can provide crucial value. One thing to keep in mind is that cards like Test of Endurance or Felidar Sovereign are not end-all, be-all-win cons for life gain and can instead put a massive target on you for a turn cycle that will end up being your downfall. Instead, look for things that give you incremental value like +1/+1 Counters from cards like Nykthos Paragon if you want to play an aggressive go-wide strategy like in my Trostani deck or The Gaffer who draws you cards. Life-gain also has gotten a suite of neat recent Commanders to take the mechanic to new heights like Amalia Benevides Aguirre who works as a Voltron Commander with a unique wrath effect tied to Life Gain (That I pulled off the other week to amazing hype) or Will, Scion of Peace who makes life-gain grant you massive discounts for spells. The last thing to note for eager life gainers is all that life can be used as a resource for powerful effects like Bolas’s Citadel to start casting multiple spells off the top of the library or as an alternative casting cost for spells like with Marshland Bloodcaster. As life-gain has made me have really enjoyable and long-lasting games, there are many ways this mechanic can still be effective at not just survival but also success!
Here are some cards Jake mentioned in this post:

Felidar Sovereign (Battle for Zendikar #26)The Gaffer (Tales of Middle-earth Commander #12)

Amalia Benavides Aguirre (The Lost Caverns of Ixalan #221)Nykthos Paragon (Modern Horizons 2 #22)

And there you have it! Life-gain is more than just a fun way to win, but also a valuable resource! Thank you, Jake!
